Hand-painted gifts for Christmas and St Nicholas Day – DIY ideas straight from Krakow

Another jumper, another gift set… sound familiar? This year you can give something nobody else has: a gift you paint yourself during a pottery painting session in Krakow. A hand-painted mug or plate is a keepsake for years, andpottery painting over coffee is a lovely way to spend a winter afternoon. Here’s what to paint, who to paint it for and when to come so it’s ready before St Nicholas Day and Christmas Eve 🎄

Why do DIY gifts mean more?

Because they show the time and thought you’ve put into them. You don’t need to be able to paint – a wonky Christmas tree or a “To the best Mum” message is more touching than a perfect shop-bought design. And because the pottery is fired in a kiln, the mug is made for everyday use, not just for the shelf.

7 hand-painted gift ideas

  1. A mug with a name or a memory – a classic that ends up in their hands every day. A name, a date, an inside joke or a portrait of their dog.
  2. A plate for Santa’s cookies – a great idea for families with kids. It comes back to the table every year on 6 December and on Christmas Eve.
  3. A trinket bowl – for jewellery, keys or spices. A lovely gift for a friend or a colleague.
  4. A figurine – an animal, a mushroom, a piece of fruit… A little thing that brings joy and needs no talent.
  5. A piggy bank– a perfect gift for a child or for someone saving up for a dream.
  6. A “coffee for two” set– two mugs with matching designs for a couple or for your parents.
  7. A tote bag or T-shirt with your own drawing – for someone who prefers everyday items to pottery.

Christmas designs for mugs and plates – ideas for beginners

Not sure what to paint? Simple motifs work best and look great even if it’s your first time holding a brush:

  • Christmas trees and spruce branches – a few green strokes and dots of gold or red.
  • Stars and snowflakes – white or navy, scattered all over the mug.
  • Gingerbread, reindeer and snowmen – perfect for a plate for Santa.
  • Red and white stripes like a candy cane – striking and really easy.
  • A message or dedication – a name, a date or a short “Merry Christmas”. That’s what makes the gift truly personal.

Tip: before you start, sketch your design on paper or look for inspiration on your phone. We’ll tell you which colours look best after firing.

Which gift for whom?

  • For mum and grandma: a plate with a floral pattern, a bowl, a mug with a grandchild’s handprint.
  • For dad and grandpa: a big coffee mug with his favourite saying.
  • For your girlfriend or boyfriend: a pair of matching mugs or a plate showing your special place.
  • For a friend: a jewellery bowl – or even better, painting together over coffee and cake.
  • For a teacher: a mug painted by your child. Pottery painting with kids in Krakow is a great way for little ones to make a gift themselves – and the mess stays with us, not at home! 😉

What does pottery painting in Krakow look like at Namalujse Café?

  1. Come to Karmelicka 27 (ideally with a table booking), open daily from 10:00 to 22:00.
  2. Pick a piece of white pottery from the shelf: a mug, plate, bowl, figurine or piggy bank.
  3. You get paints, brushes and tips, and you order coffee and dessert on site.
  4. Paint at your own pace – a table booking covers 2 hours.
  5. We fire the pottery in our kiln and send you a text message when it’s ready to collect.<br/>

When should you come to have it ready for Christmas?

Firing takes up to 14 working days, so a DIY gift needs a little planning:

  • For St Nicholas Day (6 December): paint your pottery by around 13 November at the latest.
  • For Christmas Eve (24 December): paint your pottery by around 3 December at the latest.

Running out of time? No problem! Give a voucher for an afternoon of pottery painting. It’s electronic, so you can buy it even on Christmas Eve, and the lucky recipient has 12 months to paint whatever they like.

How to wrap a hand-painted gift?

A hand-painted mug doesn’t need fancy packaging. Brown paper, string and a sprig of spruce are enough, and you can tuck their favourite tea, coffee or gingerbread inside. Add a little card saying the gift was painted especially for them – it always makes an impression. If you can’t collect the pottery in person, we’ll send it by courier to any address you choose.

A gift and a get-together in one

The best thing about DIY gifts is that you can make them together. Arrange a pre-Christmas pottery painting session in Krakow with friends, family or your team – everyone leaves with a gift for someone special and in a great mood.
